About Us

burowlIn December 1999, a group of dedicated birders and community-minded environmentalists formed the Sonoran Audubon Society (SAS) in the West Valley of Maricopa County. In June 2000, we became a chapter of the National Audubon Society.
Our mission is to educate our members, as well as the community at large, about all wildlife (with an emphasis on birds), habitats, and the beauty and importance of the many complex interactions that make for a healthy environment. We encourage everyone’s involvement in the conservation, preservation and restoration of natural ecosystems and biological diversity.

SAS meets on the second Wednesday of each month (except June, July and August) at the West Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 5904 W. Cholla St. (corner of Cholla & 59th Ave.), from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Click here to see a map for directions. At these meetings we discuss current subjects of interest to the membership, report bird sightings, and we have programs and speakers on a variety of topics. There are annual dues for being a member of SAS, but we want to stress that VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.

We have three or four field trips each month, including summer months. The trips vary from just a few hours in the morning to three-day trips. Some trips are mornings only, but we plan longer ones if interest is expressed by the membership. Most of the trips are birding events, but we do intersperse other activities if our members express special interests.

We hold several identification workshops each year. In the past, we have devoted workshops to Beginners Birding, Sparrow Identification, Shore Bird Identification, Butterfly Identification, as well as Wildlife Photography. We involve ourselves in many conservation efforts and festivals in cooperation with other groups holding similar interests. Each month we publish our newsletter, Gambel’s Tales, and we invite you to go to our website: http://www.sonoranaudubon.org/ to read the latest edition. Here, you will also find any other information you may need. Our mailing address is: SAS, PO Box 8068, Glendale, AZ 85312-8068. We encourage you to come to our meetings.
