It was a nice morning when five of us – Marshall Esty, Shirley Fackleman, Vera Markham, Betty Roberts and George Wall (leader) – headed to the Chandler Veterans Oasis Park to do some birding.

The park was dedicated in April 2008, so it is fairly new. They have a nice education center,
picnic armadas, restrooms and even drinking fountains here and there. There is one main lake and 5 discharge ponds. Yes, this is a water treatment facility just like the Gilbert Water Ranch. In fact, the place looks just like the Gilbert Water Ranch did about 7 years ago. There are trees, shrubs, flowers, etc., but they are very small. Give this place a chance and in a few years, it will be great birding.

The 21 species seen or heard were Mallard, American Coot, Spotted Sandpiper, Blacknecked Stilt, Killdeer, Belted Kingfisher (h), Burrowing Owl, Rock Pigeon, Mourning Dove, Eurasian Collared Dove, White-winged Dove, Verdin, House Sparrow, House Finch, Yellow Warbler, Horned Lark, European Starling, Great-tailed Grackle, Redwinged Blackbird, Yellow-headed Blackbird and Bullock’s Oriole.
