Prior to the “Retreat”, a bird walk was held. The 14 people participating were Marilynn Cute, Stanley & Darnelle Dunn, Joe Ford, Darnell Kirksey, Bob McCormick, Barb Meding, Rich & Carol Schooler, Donna Smith, Tice Supplee, Jerry Theis, George Wall and Kathy Wheeler.

It was a beautiful crisp morning and as soon as the sun rose a little, the birds started coming out. While we were doing the bird walk, bird banding was taking place. After we finished our walk, many of us watched some of the banding and releasing of the birds which added to the total. The 42 species seen or heard were Mallard, Turkey Vulture, Cooper’s Hawk, Black Hawk (h), American Coot, Mourning Dove, Inca Dove, Greater Roadrunner, Anna’s Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Gila Woodpecker, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Black Phoebe, Vermilion Flycatcher, Bell’s Vireo, Plumbeous Vireo, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Verdin (h), Canyon Wren, Bewick’s Wren, House Wren, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Hermit Thrush, Orange-crowned Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Wilson’s Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Summer Tanager, Western Tanager, Spotted Towhee, Canyon Towhee, Abert’s Towhee, Black-throated Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Black-headed Grosbeak, Blue Grosbeak, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch and House Sparrow.
