Volunteers, including trip leader, John Delventhal, have created an extensive trail that traverses the marshland (now dry) around the Page Springs Fish Hatchery, southwest of Sedona. Bullock's Oriole, Green Heron and Black-crowned Night Heron greeted the group as they arrived at 7:30 a.m. at the ponds near the entrance to the new Page Springs Important Bird Area. The habitat includes large cottonwoods, willows, mulberry, hackberry, and a variety of shrubs and flowering plants which provide food and nesting sites.

With so much foliage there were many glimpses of birds rather than good looks, but the Summer Tanager was out in his crimson splendor. As the morning progressed and the temperature increased bird activity lessened and John Delventhal ended a good trip with a great treat--lunch at his new home in Cornville. Lydia, his wife, had prepared a wonderful, cool repast and sharing their space made this field trip "extra special."

The 50 bird species seen and heard were: Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Mallard, Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, Gambel's Quail, Sandpiper sp., Mourning Dove, Inca Dove, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, Belted Kingfisher, Gila Woodpecker, Northern Red-shafted Flicker, Black Phoebe, Say's Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Western Kingbird, Bell's Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Common Raven, Violet- green Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Bridled Titmouse, Verdin, Whitebreasted Nuthatch, Bewick's Wren, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, Lucy's Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-breasted Chat, Summer Tanager, Abert's Towhee, Song Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Blue Grosbeak, Red-winged Blackbird, Great-tailed Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird, Bullock's Oriole, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch, House Sparrow.
