Pinal Mountain August 1, 2009 By George Wall ![]() Zone-tailed Hawk Photo by Steve Petrie If you are a bird watcher and have never been on a trip led by Dr. David Pearson, then you missed out on fantastic trips as proven by this trip. Dr. Pearson can hear, spot birds and draw them in like a true professional. The group of eight (Marion Bound, Sherry Lock, Vera Markham, Dr. David Pearson (leader), Steve Petrie, Rich and Carol School and George Wall) met up at the Tempe Library and left there a few minutes to 5 a.m. (too early for some). We reached the dirt road near Globe, Arizona, and started up towards the peak. Before we even got half way, we had seen or heard 37 species including Ash-throated Flycatcher, Crissal Thrasher, Black-chinned Sparrow and Juniper Titmouse - a great start. The temperature was mostly in the 70s during the morning, but reached 80 by noon; still, the birds were there. The 76 species seen or heard were Gambel’s Quail, Turkey Vulture, Harris’s Hawk, Zonetailed Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Band-tailed Pigeon, Eurasian Collared Dove, White-winged Dove, Mourning Dove, Inca Dove, Greater Roadrunner, White-throated Swift, Magnificent Hummingbird, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Anna’s Hummingbird, Calliope Hummingbird, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Acorn Woodpecker, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Greater Pewee, Western Wood-Pewee (h), Cordilleran Flycatcher, Dusky-capped Flycatcher, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Cassin’s Kingbird, Western Kingbird, Gray Vireo, Plumbeous Vireo (h), Hutton’s Vireo, Warbling Vireo (h), Stellar’s Jay (h), Western Scrub-Jay, Common Raven, Violet-green Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Mountain Chickadee, Bridled Titmouse, Juniper Titmouse, Bushtit, Red-breasted Nuthatch, White-breasted Nuthatch, Pygmy Nuthatch, Cactus Wren, Bewick’s Wren, House Wren, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Hermit Thrush, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, Curve-billed Thrasher (h), Phainopepla, Virginia’s Warbler, Blackthroated Gray Warbler, Grace’s Warbler, Red-faced Warbler, Painted Redstart, Hepatic Tanager, Western Tanager, Spotted Towhee, Canyon Towhee, Abert’s Towhee, Rufous-crowned Sparrow (h), Chipping Sparrow, Black-chinned Sparrow, Yellow-eyed Junco, Black-eaded Grosbeak, Great-tailed Grackle, Bullock’s Oriole, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch and House Sparrow.
