Tres Rios November 18, 2009 by Eleanore Campbell ![]() Yellow-headed Blackbird Photo by George Wall Blue-winged
Teals predominated the flock of ducks wintering on the pond at Tres
Rios Wetlands in Phoenix. American Wigeons, Gadwalls and Mallards added
their distinctive color patterns to the waterfowl assemblage. Common
Moorhens, American Coots and Pied-billed Grebes were among the mix.
A flock of Yellow-headed Blackbirds dropped in and out of the reeds. Many Yellow-rumped Warblers foraged in the cottonwoods with a couple of Orange-crowned Warblers. Lots of introduced plant species among the native trees helped make the stroll along the paths an artistic venture. Birds seen at the Hayfield area were: European Starling, Mourning dove, Great-tailed Grackle, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Red-winged Blackbird, Double-crested Cormorant, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Northern Cardinal, Gambel’s Quail, Abert’s Towhee, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, Northern Flicker, Anna’s Hummingbird, Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, Gadwall, American Wigeon, American Coot, Black Phoebe, Common Moorhen, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Verdin, White-crowned Sparrow, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Orange-crowned Warbler, Pied-billed Grebe, Marsh Wren and Red-tailed Hawk. Participants were: Haylie Hewitt, Rosemary Zanter, Joe Ford, Dean and Joan Luehrs, Kathy Wheeler, Rosemary and Rich Sedowski, Vera Markham and Eleanor Campbell, leader.
