Fossil Creek May 4, 2009 by George Wall ![]() Phainopepla Photo by Robert Shantz <>We left for Fossil Creek early in
the morning in order to get on the long (15 miles) dirt road to the
creek just after
sunup. We birded along the way stopping at various points and saw birds
like the Phainopepla and Ashthroated Flycatchers which were plentiful.
By the time we got to Fossil Creek, we’d already seen 30 species.
At the creek the water was running strong and cold; yet, there were a few hardy souls in the water. Since this was a Monday, there weren’t that many people or vehicles – just wait until the weekend when you’ll see a hundred people there. After checking out the creek, we found a spot overlooking it and had lunch. A nice time was had by all in the 70 degree weather. There were ten of us on this trip – Dan Bohlmann, Len Boeder, Dick Fogle, Joe Ford, Ed Fulkerson, Cheri Laude, Vera Markham, Barbara Meding, Paul Soame and George Wall (leader). The 36 species of birds seen or heard were Turkey Vulture, Cooper’s Hawk on a nest, Red-tailed Hawk, Gambel’s Quail, Rock Pigeon, Eurasian Collared-Dove, Mourning Dove, Gila Woodpecker, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Western Kingbird, Phainopepla, Cactus Wren (h), Rock Wren, Bewick’s Wren (h), Northern Mockingbird, American Robin, Bridled Titmouse, Verdin (h), Western Scrub-Jay, Common Raven, House Sparrow, Bell’s Vireo (h), Hutton’s Vireo, House Finch, Orange-crowned Warbler, Lucy’s Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Summer Tanager, Chipping Sparrow, Great-tailed Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird and Hooded Oriole. We also saw a couple of hummingbirds, but couldn't identify which species.
